Contemporary Art Offended by Manifestation of Violence
In July 1999, the exhibition titled “Life Beyond,” showing 24 contemporary artworks in a cemetery in Rome was closed two days after opening. Three of the artworks had been smashed to pieces. One of the show’s curators said, “The artists have decided to pull out because they found this manifestation of violence to be offensive to them and to all contemporary art.”

1. The thing about reading onscreen is that the various navigational apparatuses surround and infiltrate the content as they present it. The navigational apparatus spreads fungus-like throughout the content. (It is present on all sides, and the content itself becomes navigation in the form of hyperlinks.) As the content is subsumed by the navigational apparatus, reading and looking become increasingly accelerated acts—of propelling the reader toward the next thing, which is most likely another opportunity to make a purchase or to make a deposit in a remote database.
